Episode: Cousin Ophar

November 12, 2018

Mitchum tells tales of his cousin Ophar Brookshire. Cousin Ophar & Mitchum got in to all sorts of trouble – Ophar would lose his false teeth, bought an airplane, and woke up missing his car and pants.

“He was their source of entertainment. He could buck dance real good. Now if you know what buck dancing is. Well it’s mountain music. People would just dance – buck dance – mountain tap dancing maybe. Except you do it out in the dirt.”

Remember we linked to some buck dancing a few episodes ago so you can find that here on Bonnie & Clyde Part 1 at the bottom of the page.

  • Cousin Ophar Brookshire
  • Cousin Ophar Brookshire later in life
  • Shuffleboard table not unlike the one at Grace’s that Ophar would dance on.

In the second part of Mitchum’s story of Grace Reynolds life & death, he talks about the arrest, his amnesia, grieving for Grace from behind bars, and the drunk attorney that represented him.

Mitchum mentions that the lawyer, Ron Patton, who showed up and offered to get him off for ten thousand dollars was dressed like Bat Masterson. Anyone remember the TV show? Here’s a clip:

Episode: Bonnie & Clyde Part 1

October 29, 2018

Mitchum tells the hardest story he’s ever had to tell – the life and death of Grace Reynolds. Join him as talks about their first meeting, the gun battles in beer joints, and the night everything changed for both of them.

“Hell, let’s just say it. Doyles were their names. I got two Doyles after me. One of them’s bad to shoot and the other one’s bad to cut.”

  • Grace’s school photo (year unknown)
  • Grace Reynolds
  • Grace Reynolds
  • Stoke’s Cafe aka Cattle Barn Beer Joint – just before it was torn down circa 2000

Mitchum tells us that Grace resembled the Classic Mabel Black Label woman from this commercial and therefore people used to call her Mabel:
